Walk in! Dance out!

You will learn some of the basic concepts, steps and culture of the Argentine tango. By the end of the course you will be dancing and experience the magic of the dance! This is an intensive course consisting of 9 hours of teaching in 6 lessons.

Dates: Wednesdays 22, 29 January, 5 February
              8:00 - 9:30 pm

               Saturdays: 25 January, 1 , 8 February
                5:00 - 6:30 pm

Venue: Observatory Recreation Centre, corner Collingwood and Rawson Roads, free secure parking.

Cost: R550 per person

Libertango is offering an intensive three week programme in Argentine tango, a gentle and sensual couple dance that has the world mesmerised.

The programme is for people who have never danced Argentine tango, you will learn the basic steps and the culture of the dance . There are 6 lessons over 3 weeks.

Dates and Times:

The course runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Tuesdays: 16, 23, 30 July - 8:00- 9:20 pm
Saturdays: 20, 27 July, 3 August  5:00 - 6:30 pm

Venue: Observatory Community Centre, Corner Collingwood and Rawson Roads, Observatory - FREE SECURE PARKING.

Libertango is excited to announce that two wonderful teachers and performers will be visiting our shores in February. Murat and and Elif are two of Turkey's top tango dancers. Murat runs the TanGO TO Istanbul Tango Festival and other premier tango events in Turkey  where he hosts the cream of Argentine tango teachers. They have taught in many places in Europe and Turkey and are popluar in Russia which has a very high standard of tango.

Some of you will remember Paz Giorgi who visited South Africa a couple of years ago with the iconic dancer Fabian Salas. They were hosted by Tango Tensity in Joburg and Paz gave a women's technique class in Cape Town. Well here is a youtube clip of Murat dancing with Paz.

My Year of Tango Scholarship

In its commitment to development Argentine tango in Cape Town, Libertango is offering an exciting opportunity for a couple who wants to take up the challenge of learning the Argentine tango for one year.

The "My Year of Tango Scholarship" offers aspring tango dancers with talent and determination tango lessons for ONE YEAR absolutely free.

What will you learn?

You will be introduced to Argentine tango as an absolute beginner and move through the levels according to your progress. You will be introduced to the the culture of tango and the social tango scene in Cape Town.  Learning to tango will be a challenge but dedication and enjoyment is a guaranteed recipe for success.

About the Scholarship
  • The scholarship is for one couple
  • Duration: January - December 2013
  • It includes free weekly tango lessons and 4 private lessons*
  • It does not include free entrance to socials

* Beginners and Level 2 lessons are on Thursday evening; Level 3 is on Wednesday evening.

Terms and Conditions

To apply for this scholarship you should consider your weekly time contraints and motivation to learn Argentine tango. You should be someone who enjoys music and dance. You should be mature, easy -going and sociable.

The terms and conditions below must be fulfilled for the scholarship to be valid.

  • Dancers must attend 80% of weekly lessons. Failure to attend lessons will lead to cancellation of the scholarship.
  • Dancers must attend at least one weekly tango social event in Cape Town to practise your skills. The entrance fee for social events is not included in the scholarship. This is usually about R40.
  • The scholarship does not include lessons with visiting teachers.
  • Students should have their own means of transport to attend lessons and tango socials ("milongas")
  • Applicants should have previously shown some dedication to the study of music, dance or martial arts
  • Libertango reserves the right to cancel lessons and cancel the scholarship if necessary.

  1. Why do you want to learn Argentine tango?
  2. Do a youtube search on the following Argentine tango dancers from Buenos Aires: Fabian Peralta, Pablo Inza and Osky Casas. Say which one you like best and why.
  3. Listen to the following tango orchestras on the internet: Di Sarli, D'arienzo, Calo. Do you like this music? What do you like about it?
  4. Say how you have previously shown commitment to either a dance, musical or martial arts form.


Applications should be submitted by 1 November 2012. Applicants will be told by 20 November 2012 whether they have been successful. Libertango may contact you for an interview once applications have been received.

Rachael will be performing with Russell Kleintjies at the Jamboflavour Festival in Salt River on Sunday 3 July at 1:30 pm. This will be followed by a FREE BEGINNERS TANGO LESSON. Bring your friends to try out tango for free.

Jamboflavour will take place at Salt River Hall, Voortrekker Road, around the corner from the Biscuit MIll, from 10 am - 6 pm on Sunday 3 July.
